Lessons from Obstacle Training

The Warped Wall

The warped wall is 14 ft tall but to comprehend it’s intimidating height, you have to be standing in front of it.

So I have built “obstacles” in my backyard for my kids to play on…  ok, who am I kidding?  I built it so I can play too, I am still a kid at heart, even though I was born in 1967.  Anyway… of all the obstacles we have built, the toughest yet is the 14’ tall warped wall. It is an intimating structure that takes the right technique to master.

OBSTACLE: a noun… a thing that blocks one’s way or prevents or hinders progress

The Physics of the Obstacle

In order to conquer it you have to understand the physics of the “obstacle”. You have to generate horizontal momentum (mass x speed) and then convert it into vertical momentum to power up and grab the top of the wall then pulling your body weight up onto the top platform at which point you can perform a number of victory celebration movements without falling off.

So with all of that in mind, I am coming to grips with the TRUTH that with out researching the physics behind this beast your chances of just running up the wall on your first, second or third attempt are slim, unless you are really tall.

Just start doing something?

When we set a goal like losing weight or running a PR on a specific event, a lot of people would say: “just start doing something!”  It’s true that if you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always gotten. But just doing something without basing your “doing” (your moment by moment actions and decisions) on TRUTH, will most likely leave you frustrated and discouraged with your results at which point you will most likely stop doing anything, leaving you in about the same shape you started.

It would be like getting in the car to drive to Nashville with the mindset “just start driving” but if I head south I am not only not reaching my desired destination but i am getting even further away. I believe setting goals is motivating but we will set ourselves up for failure from the start if we don’t first Be Still and Know the Truth we are doing more damage than good.

IMG_5351Absolute Truth in Every Area of Life

There is an absolute TRUTH in every area of our life, from our nutrition (fuel), to our movement (fitness), to our finances, to our sexual purity (click for more about God’s designed Truth/Boundaries). If any part of our life isn’t “working” it probably points to the fact that we don’t KNOW or understand (in a pragmatic way) the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

Belief & Potential

The other part of attacking the warped wall is BELIEF. If I approach the wall being timid I have started at a disadvantage. My first step toward the wall will be weak and some part of me will be holding back. Now, I have the POTENTIAL to realistically get to the top and grab it with two hands. I am a personal trainer, I workout and run daily, so I should be strong enough and fast enough with the agility to do it. But lack of confidence in the Truth (or fear of failure) will outweigh my ability, if I choose to let it.
